At the KCCC Exhibition Hall – Eglė Ridikaitė “Cultural floor”
The painting exhibition “You Came, You Saw, You Left: Cultural Floor“ by Eglė Ridikaite opening on Friday, 29th of June, 2018, at 6 pm in KKKC Exhibition Hall (2 Didzioji Vandens Str., Klaipeda).
An exhibition of contemporary painting, revealing the love of the painter Eglė Ridikaitė for beauty andVilnius, inviting to see and preserve what we have inherited, was presented at the capital last year. The exhibition “You Came, You Saw, You Left: Cultural Floor“ comes to the coast supplemented by new paintings, one of them – dedicated to the street ofKlaipėda.
The beginning of the cycle of these paintings was when the artist was wondering through Vilnius, the staircases of old buildings where her eyes caught the forgotten decor of the staircases – ceramic floor compositions. Having noticed the urban aesthetics of the late 19th century and the early 20th century reflecting in those floors, that many overlook and do not appreciate, Eglė Ridikaitė transfers the decorative floor compositions to her paintings. This way she immortalised what was overlooked and contributed to the preservation of the heritage as well. The natural size of the compositions, the true silhouettes and colours were captured in her art work. Thanks to the imagination of the artist, those compositions, having been lifted off the ground, are shown in all their greatness, the footprints of the old inhabitants can be seen as they tell their stories, refresh our memory.
“When exhibiting her floors vertically, the artist destroys the normal understanding of logics, but only this way the beauty is lifted up from its dusty darkness to the proscenium of admiration, remembrance and respect for the past”, - art critic Rasa Andriušytė-Žukienė says.
Eglė Ridikaitė uses a complex, exceptional technique which she created on her own: having covered the canvas with the beforehand prepared hand made stencils; she does not paint, but sprays aerosol paint in several layers until she achieves a suitable shade and facture. According to R. Andriušytė-Žukienė, “when working with the colour spraying method, this modern day painter does not touch the canvas neither with the brush, nor with her hands. The sprayed paint is like specks of dust that lie down on the surface. This way the impression of image deadweight and ephemerality is reinforced”.
The exhibition “You Came, You Saw, You Left: Cultural Floor“ is not only intended to see the beauty that the artist lifted off the ground to our eye level. It is also intended to make us think about what we have inherited, what are we leaving behind and what we are taking away with us once we are leaving.
Having held thirteen personal exhibitions and taking part in more than eighty group exhibitions during her art career, in 2018 Eglė Ridikaitė was awarded the Lithuanian Republic Government Art Award and Mayor of Vilnius' Award for the cycle “Cultural Floor”, which took more than 4 years to complete.
The exhibition is organised by gallery “Contour Art Gallery” (Vilnius), curator – art critic Vilma Mačianskaitė.
The exhibition will be open until the 29th of July, 2018.
