MADE IN KALININGRAD

Exhibition opening: on the 3rd May, 2013 at 6 pm KCCC exhibition spaces (Didzioji Vandens str. 2, Klaipeda)

The exhibition „Made in Kaliningrad“ is curated by Kaliningrad (the Russian Federation) curator Evgeniy Umanskiy. This exhibition represents the largest ever and the most diverse in terms of styles and genres “landing force” of Kaliningrad artists in Klaipėda. The art project introduced under both witty and ambitious name represents a wide retrospective of contemporary Kaliningrad art, in all aspects very Kaliningrad-like „art product“ aimed at exporting to neighbouring countries. Geographical proximity of Russia to Lithuania – the neighbouring countries with long, complicated and closely intertwined historical past – is still being perceived as the ground for economic and logistics relations rather than for wider cultural cooperation, especially in the area of contemporary art. Therefore, this project will help visitors of the exhibition to learn more about the neighbouring country and to familiarise with its people through the artworks of the artists focusing on real-life, urgent problems visualised through common and intimate details of every day life. Photographs, video art and augmented reality artworks, performances created by the artists as if ask – „What associations are triggered in Your mind by this strange territory that has no common border with the „Great Russia“? What is the difference between „soviet“, „Russian“, „national“? To what extent does the freedom of society determine development of the country? How can gender and ethnical aspects of identity be reflected and embodied in every day life, universal human and personal values – in the social context?
