KLAIPĖDA ARCHITECTURE 2024
Klaipėda Architecture 2024 offers a comprehensive overview of contemporary architecture, reflecting the creative processes and professional aspirations of Klaipėda-based architects. The exhibition invites visitors to take a closer look at the evolving urban landscape – from completed projects to emerging concepts still taking shape on the drawing board.
This year’s exhibition stands out for its thematic and stylistic diversity. It showcases residential and public buildings, interior design projects, competition entries, urban concepts, sustainable development initiatives, and architectural experiments. More than a professional chronicle, it is a collective narrative of the city as an ever-evolving, multilayered space where function meets aesthetics and professional responsibility.
The exhibition raises timely questions: What kind of environment are we creating? How does architecture shape our everyday experience? What kind of city will we leave for future generations? This year’s projects engage with some of today’s most pressing issues – urban redevelopment, the interplay between the old town and new districts, the quality of public spaces, the human connection to the environment, and the role of architecture in the discourse on sustainability.
In the exhibition, architecture is presented not only as a technical or artistic discipline but also as a cultural commentary, responding to social, ecological, and political challenges. It provides a space for reflection, dialogue, and community engagement. Quality architecture arises not from form alone, but from a deep connection to place where memory lives.
The exhibition features 41 projects submitted by 22 architecture studios, ranging from subtle reconstructions to unconventional architectural solutions. These works testify to a high level of professional competence and a growing sense of place –attentiveness to context, history, and human experience.
(NON)HERITAGE. KLAIPĖDA
This exhibition, based on architect Petras Džervus’ artistic research, presents an experiment exploring Klaipėda’s late 20th-century architecture through specific objects that are not formally recognized as heritage but hold undeniable significance. Acknowledging their value could help shape future criteria for evaluating architecture from this period and assessing its role in the city’s identity and collective memory. The exhibition also includes interviews with Klaipėda-based architects, whose insights offer a fresh look at the architectural legacy of the time – its origins, meaning, and how its value has been preserved (or lost) today. It raises important questions: What makes architecture valuable? How does it gain – or fail to gain – heritage status? The exhibition invites us to rethink how we define architectural value in a shifting landscape of aesthetics, politics, and urban development. It also asks what criteria are needed to evaluate 20th-century architecture – is form enough, or should we also consider its historical and cultural layers? This is an exhibition about remembering and forgetting – about the layers of the city not yet written into textbooks, but still speaking to us, if only we’re willing to listen.
On July 1, from 12:00 to 1:00 PM, in celebration of Architects’ Day, we invite you to join a guided tour of the exhibitions and explore the accompanying publication.[Text Wrapping Break]The tour will be led by Mantas Daukšys, Chairman of the LASKAO Board.
