ALL THIS IS NOT A FANTASY: THE LIFE AND WORK OF ADOLFAS MEKAS

On the 1st of March at 6 pm Klaipeda Culture Communication Centre exhibition spaces (Didžioji Vandens str. 2, Klaipėda) will present a Retrospect of life and work of Adolfas Mekas (1925-2011) – representative of independent cinema of the USA, still little known in Lithuania.

Adolfas Mekas is better known as the brother of Jonas Mekas, pioneer of American avant-garde cinema. However, it is important to know that  during his strenuous life Adolfas not only played an important part in producing films of Jonas Mekas,  but was often a co-writer of his films, together with brother Jonas founded “Film Culture”  –  a  cinema criticism magazine that became highly influential later on; but he was also a very gifted and independent creative person, film director, writer, as well as one of the most talented and greatly respected professors in Bard Collee (USA), loved by his students.  Adolfas taught and influenced future filmmakers for about 30 years.

The Retrospect presents a rather wide range of Adolfas Mekas creative work that has never been exhibited inLithuania before. One of its parts is a photo exhibition covering his life and work – family photographs, moments of his professional life, film screenshots. Separately exhibited are video recordings of the lectures from 1996-2003 delivered in Bard College. Also presented are short and full length films and animations of Adolfas Mekas’ students.
