DALIA TRUSKAITĖ’S EXHIBITION „NOT ABOUT“

DALIA TRUSKAITĖ

On the 15th of March, 2019, on friday, at 5 pm at KCCC Exhibition Hall (Didžioji Vandens st. 2, Klaipėda) Dalia Truskaitė’s creative exhibition „Not About “ is opening.

Artist Dalia Truskaitė in Klaipėda presents these works: “Not Told”, “The Curtain”, “Investment” and “Four Handfuls”. Although there are only four works, there are many exhibits: the “Not Told” installation consists of 380 matte glass leafs of ultra-thin A4 paper sheet size, symmetrically laid down on the floor of the Exhibition Hall. According to the texts about art of author Vytautas Paplauskas, there are several possibilities for reading this work at the same time. It is easiest to attribute meanings to the matter of the work – to glass. It is impossible to ignore its qualities as a material, which of theirselves are associated with fragility, vulnerability and temporariness. The entirely different thing is artist’s chosen shape, i.e. white sheets of paper. On the one hand, the white sheet is associated with the idealized tabula rasa state, cleanliness, the transparency of consciousness. On the other hand – with emptiness, shortage, stagnation of a thought. However, the artist herself emphasizes the positive meaning of a white sheet of paper. And by using glass as the matter of the work D. Truskaitė visualizes the fragility and temporariness of this „white paper sheet“ state.

Another larger format work “The Curtain”, made from glass that was fused in shapes, according to D. Truskaitė, appeared while she was arguing with the exposition space of the KCCC Exhibition Hall, more precisely – with the black curtain that is there. The artist was hesitating until the last moment whether this title would match this new piece of art, so it might be possible that the visitors of the exhibition will read a different name on the label.

‘Considering D. Truskaitė’s exhibition in the wider context of glass art, it is undoubtedly possible to attribute it to contemporary glass art, because the artist conceptualizes the glass as a material. And in the context of contemporary art as a whole, it could be associated with minimalism, because D. Truskaitė’s works are characterized by minimalistic aesthetics. From minimalism the artist takes over the simplicity of a shape, the laconicism of the visual language, the tendency to abstraction. But unlike other traditional minimalists, D. Truskaitė does not avoid operating in forms that have clear cultural connotations, so the artist’s works can be called an original synthesis of minimalism and postminimalism’, V. Paplauskas wrote about D. Truskaitė’s creative work.
