Elena Grudzinskaitė’ “SITE-SPECIFIC” at KKKC Exhibition Hall

Personal exhibition “Site-specific” of artist Elena Grudzinskaitė runs from October 14 till November 13, 2016 at KKKC Exhibition Hall. Opening on 5 p.m. 14th October 2016 (Friday).

Elena Grudzinskaitė belongs to a younger generation of Lithuanian graphic artists. In her artistic practice, Elena analyses the relationship between an individual and the territory, the limits and fragility of space and time parameters, human impact on physical changes in the environment, and the notion of landscape as “levitating” between culture and nature, between reality and fiction. Her work is marked by distinctive transformation of images. In their making, Elena Grudzinskaitė uses traditional graphic techniques as a tool for examining broader contexts, including surfaces and the meanings behind them. In the exposition space, the author normally combines her large-format graphic prints with natural and synthetic objects, artifacts, and real-life elements to create an illusory correlation between reality and artificiality.

In presenting her exhibition Site-specific, Elena communicates the meaning conveyed by its title not as a concept of visual art movement or current, where the artwork is an integral part of the environment, public space and the landscape, but rather as an act of settling the thought inside a landscape-generated image.

The exhibition presents artworks made between 2014 and 2016. In her previous series of prints, titled Fake.Moonscapes (2015), the author employed graphic art techniques to process astrophotographs of the Moon, which she then juxtaposed with images of the mountains she took on her own journeys. In Fake.Landscape and Reconstructions series of 2016, Elena Grudzinskaitė graphically depicted earthly terrains that were used by film industry to create an impression of extraterrestrial landscapes. The artist displayed those images together with a series of photopolymers to transform the sites she has actually visited into unearthly scenery. Elena presents landscapes that document reality and, at the same time, mystify it by bringing in and lodging new meanings to make manipulations inside the viewer’s consciousness.

As a whole, Site-specific questions the reality and authenticity of landscapes, terrains and territories where we have a stake – those we can see, identify and perceive. The artist reflects on the effect of transferring the recognizable totality of a territory’s natural elements to a different, extraterrestrial context. It is likely that what we perceive as a particular landscape is just a projection of our individual consciousnesses.
