“FOOTSTEPS OF LIFE NEAR THE BALTIC SEA” OF EDVARDAS MALINAUSKAS
An anniversary painting exhibition of Edvardas Malinauskas “Footsteps of Life near the Baltic Sea” will be opened at the KCCC Exhibition Hall (Didžioji Vandens str. 2, Klaipėda) on Friday, 24th of March, at 5:30 PM.
A painter, Edvardas Malinauskas, today is deservedly considered as one of the most famous representatives of Lithuanian maritime art, capable of conveying the eternal greatness of the sea, its constant change of mood, states and shades professionally and meaningfully. There is only one heroine in painted seascapes of Edvardas Malinauskas – the Baltic Sea; therefore, the author undoubtedly uses his works to represent Lithuania as a maritime nation, and Klaipėda as a Lithuanian window to the sea.
Edvardas Malinauskas also revealed himself to be a unique and interesting portrait-painter. A talented hand of the creator captured a number of people from Klaipėda, and several of the portraits were acquired by the Lithuanian Art Fund. Using a historical theme Edvardas Malinauskas pays a tribute to the Klaipėda region and its history. However, the core and the essence of the works of Edvardas Malinauskas, distinguishing him from other Lithuanian painters and granting him a special status, is a maritime theme. The seascape became the essential theme of his works.
“On the long road of creation Edvardas Malinauskas got to know all of the states and moods of the sea. Refusing secondary details he concentrates on the confrontation of water and sky, ingeniously uses the effects of light, sunset, storm and mist, draws a contrast between expression and tranquillity, and masterfully paints the waves of the sea. Extremely rare more concrete accents – stones or perching seagull – help him to create a distinctive mood. The scale of moods and states in the painter’s seascapes is as boundless as the nature itself. This is a result of a long-time observation, experience and improvement of the painting technique” – the art critic, Kristina Jokubavičienė, thus describes the works of Edvardas Malinauskas in the culture and art journal “Durys” (“Doors”).
About the author
Edvardas Malinauskas was born in Radviliškis on 21st of May, 1937. He and his parents came to live in Klaipėda in 1945. During the years 1957-1963 he had been studying painting in Vilnius Institute of Arts (now Lithuanian Academy of Arts). He came back to the port city after the graduation. During the years 1963-1969 he had been working in Klaipėda Art Factory “Dailė”, and in 1969 together with his colleagues he established Klaipėda Art School for Children and was nominated as its director. He held this office in 1969-1979 and resigned later on. Since 2001 the artist engages only in creative work.
In 1970 the artist has become a member of Lithuanian Artists’ Association. In 1987 he was granted a name of Honoured Art Figure of Lithuanian SSR. He was awarded with the medal of the Country’s Artistic Figure and a certificate of honours for Merits to Lithuanian Culture; and in 2006 Klaipėda Municipality granted him a name of the Master of Culture for the City of Klaipėda.
The painter has been participating in exhibitions since 1967. Edvardas Malinauskas – is a member of a great number of national and international exhibitions, his paintings decorate the Office of the President of the Republic of Lithuania, the Palace of the Government and other public interiors; national and foreign museums and holders of private collections have already acquired works of the artist.
The exhibition will be open until the 15th of April 2017.
