“FROM THE STREET TO A GALLERY”: EXHIBITION OF THE ARTIST TADAS VINCAITIS IN KLAIPĖDA

A personal exhibition of Tadas Vincaitis “From the Street to a Gallery” will be opened at KCCC Exhibition Hall (Didžioji Vandens str. 2, Klaipėda) on Friday, the 15^th of September, 2017, at 6 PM.

Street artist Tadas Vincaitis, using a pseudonym Plūgas for his works, is one of the pioneers of graffiti art in Lithuania. His works can be found on building facades in Vilnius, Kaunas, Šiauliai, Riga, Bethlehemand other cities. The residents of Klaipėda city also have already come to love one of his works – neo-fresco “Sapnas” (“Dream”) – created together with the artist from Klaipėda, Edvardas Šeputis, on the wall of Vilnius Academy of Arts, the faculty of Klaipėda at Daržų str.

At the exposition of the exhibition of T. Vincaitis “From the Street to a Gallery” – several works in large format, created directly on the walls of the Exhibition Hall, illustrating the influence of the graffiti subculture on the creativity of the author as well as the evolution of the artist as a creative personality, and his relationship with the surroundings and himself. Using his works the author emphasises the fact that the art forms of the new generation – graffiti, post-graffiti or the genre of neo-fresco – can also be the language of artistic expression, and not necessarily only in the social context.

“For me, as a representative of the applied arts, it was a great challenge to come up with an idea how to convey street art in a gallery. After hard considerations I finally decided that I will go beyond the exposition inside the gallery. Thus, my wish to return a part of the exposition back to the street, where this genre, quite often manoeuvring around “safe and comfortable” topic, is revealed at its best, will be reflected. With my exposition inside the gallery I will distance myself from the social messages, typical to the street art, and will present my own stylistic virage of the combination of the applied arts and neo-fresco genre as well as will try to convey the emotion of the large scale painting in the street”, – T. Vincaitis was thus talking about his future exposition.

After the exposition the paintings specially created for the exhibition on the walls of the Exhibition Hall will be destroyed – painted over by the author himself. According to the artist, this is consistent with the concept of the street art, as a temporary art. However, a neo-fresco on social topic created by T. Vincaitis-Plūgas on the building façade at Gulbių str. 2 will become a long-term continuation of the exhibition “From the Street to a Gallery” in Klaipėda.

About the author

Tadas Vincaitis-Plūgas (born in 1975 in Kaunas) in 2005 acquired a Bachelor degree in Architecture at Vilnius Academy of Arts, the faculty of Kaunas. Since 2005 he has been participating in group exhibitions in Klaipėda, Vilnius and Kaunas. In 2014, during the project “Spektras” (“Spectrum”) in Klaipėda, together with the artist Edvardas Šeputis he created a work “Sapnas” (“Dream”); in 2015 – a neo-fresco in Rasieniai Old Market Square, during the International Street Art Plein Air in Palestine “When Walls Talk” – a piece of work in the refugee centre in Bethlehem; at the International Street Art Exhibition “Same Directions” in Kaunas – a piece of work “Pašto paslaugos” (“Post Services”). In 2016, during the International Art Symposium in Riga“ Meno dienos” (“Days of Art”) he created a work “Aistra” (“Passion”); during the International Street Art Plein Air in Šiauliai “Saulės pagrobimas” (“Sun Abduction”) – a piece of work “Degantys šarvai” (“Burning Armour”). The works of the artist decorate a great number of private facades and interiors.

The exhibition will run until the 15^th of October, 2017.
