IN KLAIPĖDA– MYKOLĖ PAINTING EXHIBITION “LANDSCAPE”
On the 15th of December, 2017, Friday, 6 PM, at KCCC Exhibition Hall (Didžioji Vandens g. 2, Klaipėda) a personal painting exhibition of Mykolė “Landscape” opens. This will be the second important performance of the artist from a younger generation in Lithuania and the first personal exhibition in Klaipėda after returning from Paris and Copenhagen, where she spent ten years of her life and creation.
A collection of selected earlier artworks as well as the latest works of Mykolė, which have not yet been exhibited and published, will be on display at the exhibition. Two months spent in an art residency inFinlandunderstanding the similarities and differences of the pictorial landscape ofLithuaniaand the foreign country, gave quite the unexpected results – a new series of colourful and stylistic, energetic, dynamic and essentially unique artwork were created. Mykolė, having returned to live toLithuaniaonly this year, received support from the Lithuanian Council for Culture to carry out the research of five Lithuanian regions in the same creative manner through the brush as the main instrument of artistic research. At this exhibition, the first works of the above mentioned project of five region’s landscapes of Žemaitija, Lithuania Minor, Aukštaitija, Dzūkija, Suvalkija, carried out by the unique painting style of the artist will be presented.
However, the public of Klaipėda had their chance to get acquainted with the artworks of Mykolė up close when during this summer at the Karklė festival, the artist was working with her brushes and paint on one of the walls of the vacation homes at “Žilvitis” camp. After the festival was over, the enormous (8,5×3,4 m) unique wall painting remained as a decoration for “Žilvitis”.
Mykolė herself speaks of the landscapes that she creates as of something poetic, lyrical, and at the same time, very much tangible and rational: “The theme of the landscape is special. There are no politics, bad stories or any other intentions in nature at all – just constant regeneration, but at the same time it’s like a historical document lying there in front of our eyes. We can read it page by page, layer after layer. There is nothing random in it, everything has its own history, and however, does anyone else care about it, besides the humans? Human gives meanings to objects, and nature is a “blind and pointless desire of life” and a continuous cyclic regeneration. In my work I like to express how nature absorbs man-built structures and garbage, how it all becomes a part of the landscape. The landscape that I am painting is like an empty theatre stage, but together a movement and transformation which arose from the past, is and always will be”.
A French art critic Ingrid Luquet-Gad describes Mykolė’s landscapes as “stretching widely, nordic landscapes, that remind of the uninhabited spaces where the roots of deformation lie. In the scenes depicted, the nature is always lush and the sky is bright and wide, but it can seem that the landscape is depressed by a certain weight of a leaden vault”.
About the author
Mykolė has acquired a bachelor and master degrees at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. One of the winners of the art competition “Young painter’s prize 2013” of the Baltic States. Has held personal exhibitions in Vilnius, Paris (France), Denmark. The exhibition is partially funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.
