INGA LIKŠAITĖ EXHIBITION “HOME” AT KCCC EXHIBITION HALL

On the 6th of April, 2018, Friday, 6:30 PM, at KCCC Exhibition Hall (Didžioji Vandens g. 2, Klaipėda) an exhibition “Home. 12 hours in the air and 6000 metres of repeating the stich” by Inga Likšaitė opens.

An artist living inGermany, Inga Likšaitė exhibits the cycle called “Home”, created in 2017-2018. The artist embroiders the surface of the painted canvases by stitching, thus creating a moving visual effect. Colour and painted canvas – an important basic element of the artwork, the raster of graphic lines acts as the text of the artwork. Two layers of the painting and two techniques, combined together, twinkle and allow the image to change, depending on the position of the viewer. The motive, which can be seen as lacework and transparent from one side, changes when the viewer moves from one side to another. Minimal motives, consisting only of colour and rhythm of lines, change; the intensity of colour vibrates visually. That, what is not seen looking from the front point, appears at a different angle and vice versa.

“Previously I used to sow with sewing machines on the painted canvas. The new form of the stitch appeared when I realised, that the large stitch made by hand is more expressive and active, raising another space on the painted surface or creating an additional optical dimension. Besides, the new method of stitching seemed to be more meditative and completely different. I discovered a new expression; a different type of stitch dictated a new graphical form. Over time, the element of the stitch became my language, my philosophy. It just doesn’t stop being interesting to me, I don’t see why I should quit and look for a completely different expression, on the contrary, each time I want to make it different on the same area. I’d like to vary with the things I have already tried, go to the depths of such expression and the infinity of creation”, – I. Likšaitė tells about her art forms.

At the exhibit “Home. 12 hours in the air and 6000 metres of repeating the stitch”, Inga Likšaitė questions the content of the word “home” and raises a question about what could be the dimension of this definition. As a foreigner living inGermany, she always faces the question: what is her part in the community of a foreign country, geographical location, how closely is she linked to the place? Currently, this question is especially relevant to the artist, when we’re living in times of global migration, where the borders are open to one community and new ones are built for others. What do we mean when we speak of home? Is home – a building with the roof over the head with the necessary things in a certain environment? Is home – a feeling, a state with the perception of safety or the contrary? How do these perceptions about having and feeling correlate between?

The works of Inga requiring a lot of patience and time often replicate the previous work; each one is a prototype of another work, and collectively they kind of generate their own artistic territory, where Inga discovers an interesting transformation of creation.
