Neo Christopher Chung I Artificial Perspectives

The exhibition Artificial Perspectives by Neo Christopher Chung, an artist, assistant professor and a research scientist, is opened at the Exhibition Hall of Klaipėda Culture Communication Centre (KKKC) (Didžioji Vandens st. 2, Klaipėda).

The world is being reconstructed and reimagined by endless data and artificial intelligence. Machines – both physical and digital – have encapsulated every inch of our lives with their contradictory implications. Environmental sensors reveal climate change, but tell us that doom is inevitable; smart home devices keep us safe, while informing on us and our neighbors.

From how we think to what we do, neural processing of massive data is nudging us towards post-human conditions. Reprogramming has commenced, and it is futile to tell who is surveilling whom. Every moment speeds by us, leaving only trails of silicone waste and illegible logfiles. As quantitative science seems increasingly at odds with reality, we no longer feel the quantified self.

Artificial Perspectives gives viewers the opportunity to commune with this post-human machine. Artificial entities are cultured in synthetic biospheres seeded with AI models for language, audio, and vision. In real-time feedback loops, multi-sensory generative systems react and recoil. With environmental changes felt and interpreted hundreds of times a second, these intelligent devices exhibit chaotic behaviors that evolve with the audience. In a time in between the boundaries of machine, human and nature, Artificial Perspectives exposes our tenuous relationship with computing devices and algorithms, uninterpretable and omnipresent, that are re-defining our world.

Neo Christopher Chung crosses disciplines with an interest in data and machine culture. Through new media installations and interventions, he examines and reveals emergent aesthetics of systems that are deeply coupled with social challenges. His recent works focus on impacts of media, artificial intelligence, and cybernetics, exposing the complexity of science. To this end, he experiments with electronics, microcontrollers, and algorithms to create multi-layered works that merge new media, sculpture, and spatial practices.

Born in South Korea, Neo Christopher Chung obtained undergraduate degrees in visual studies and biomedical engineering at Duke University and Ph.D. in computational biology at Princeton University. He received M.F.A. at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław. As an assistant professor at University of Warsaw and a research scientist at University of California Los Angeles, he conducts research in computational biology and machine learning.

Artist Talk x Light House Hub

11:15 am / Thursday / 9 June

Neo Christopeher Chung will present his creative path for the Lighthouse Hub community at 11:15 am, on Thursday 9 June.

This talk will introduce the inspirations and works of Neo Christopher Chung at the intersection of arts and science. His creative practice deals with what new media art can reveal and teach us in the age of omnipotent computers and algorithms. He deals with limitations, opportunities, and potentialities of machines in relation to society, individuals, and the future. He will discuss how he experiments with a wide range of non-traditional art materials, as well as struggles with meanings of aesthetics, craft and ownership. His latest work, Artificial Perspectives, is presented for the first time at KKKC.

The Artist Talk will be hold in English. The event is open for public. Meet you here:  Liepų str. 83, Klaipeda
