Presence of the Absent

Joana Deltuvaitė "Frozen rooms" 2008

On the 30th of November at 6 p.m. at KCCC exhibition spaces will be presented group Lithuanian-Ukrainian exhibition “Presence of the Absent”.

Its participants are eight young artists – four from each country. Lithuania is represented by artists who derived from Klaipeda or currently creates there: Joana Deltuvaitė, Mindaugas ir Neringa Bumbliai, Gytis Skudžinskas ir Laura Stasiulytė. Ukraine – authors who are somehow connected to city Kharkov: Roman Minin, Vitaliy Kokhan, Alina Kleytman, Hamlet Zinkovskyi.

After more than twenty years from the collapse of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, its legacy, marks and remnants are still visible in the consciousness of people, urban development, everyday life. They are newly reborn in the present day consumer culture, intermixed with the present realties and keep existing together pointing to what does not exist anymore.

The exhibition presents artists of young generation from two post-Soviet countries – Lithuania and Ukraine. The organizers deliberately  invited authors who have been born in Soviet times but have grown up and now are creating in independent countries. They still remember the times of the old regime, however they have matured in the systems supported by democracy and are not bound to the deep nostalgia for it; therefore they are able to record and reveal existence of remnants of Soviet times in the present day context sensitively and clearly.

This Project “Presence of the Absent”  is part of a bigger international program “Tandem – Cultural Managers Exchange Ukraine – EU – Moldova”, which is funded by the “European Commission” and has been initiated by the “European Culture Foundation” and “MitOst” with the aim to create collaboration conditions for cultural organizations from European Union and Ukraine/Moldova.
