„WOMEN ON THE MOON“

On the 6th of September, 2019, on friday, at 6 p.m. at KCCC Exhibition Hall (Didžioji Vandens st. 2, Klaipėda), exhibition and performance platform „Women on the Moon“ dedicated to the Contemporary Art Month is being presented. Curators – Denise Ackerl and Laima Kreivytė.

2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the man’s landing on the Moon. From 1969 till 1972, when the programme was discontinued, 12 men participated in lunar missions. Although 13 women were also being prepared for the mission, they “ran out of time”. The Moon is a starting point for exhibition participants to talk about peering (telescopic, microscopic, panoptic, personal), spatial practices (dialectics of internal and external space, transgression of boundaries), and body dynamics in abnormal situations (weightlessness, etc.). The artists also go deep into the issues of knowing, power and gender through scientific researches and mythological narrations.

This experimental exhibition is important not only because of human capabilities, technologies or studies of the distant celestial object, but also because of the changed sensual cognition. The most important thing that happened during flying to the Moon was not exactly what NASA expected. The tasks were given to the astronauts and one of which was to photograph the Moon. But the most famous, mostly reproduced photo became not of the human on the Moon at all, but the photograph of the Earthrise, which was not even included in the mission plan. For the first time in history, humans saw their planet from space – how fragile and vulnerable it is. While flying to the Moon, the Earth was discovered. This is particularly relevant now, while global warming is presenting new challenges.

The Moon is a female gender in many languages, but in Lithuanian – it is masculine. How do language, scientific and popular images (science fiction, movies, music) affect our dreams and lives? After artists launched the Moon mission, new scenarios for the future have begun to open up.

Artists from the Great Britain, Finland, Austria, Canada and Lithuania, who explore space issues, participate in the exhibition: Denise Ackerl, Dovilė Dagienė, Dileta Deikė, Eleanor Duffin & Jo Lathwood, Eglė Grėbliauskaitė, Aurelija Maknytė, Dalia Mikonytė, Eglė Ridikaitė, Marija Teresė Rožanskaitė, Laisvydė Šalčiūtė, Valerie Tiefenbacher, Hanna Timonen, Naomi Woo, Birutė Zokaitytė, „Cooltūristės“ and others.

The exhibition will be open until the 6th of October, 2019.

Working hours of KCCC Exhibition Hall (Didžioji Vandens st. 2, Klaipėda): Wednesday – Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. (Closed during public holidays).
