The festival consists of 4 exhibitions: group exhibition “FORMAtas / FORMAt”, Rimantas Milkintas‘ personal exhibition “Milkinto pratimai / Milkintas’ Exercises“, the exhibition of Polish sculptor Mariusz Burdek “Transkriptai / Transcripts” and the group exhibition of medal art and small sculptural form “X Medalis / X-Medal” (at Klaipėda Gallery). The aim of the festival is to present ambiguous solutions of sculptural works: small plastic, medal, object art, installations and other forms, linking them to space, environment and man.

 ‘‘FORMAtas / FORMAt“

The topic of the group small sculptural form exhibition “FORMAtas / FORMAt ” is the format. In our language we associate the words form and format with the factors of the creative narrative by which we value our own domain of possibilities. The change of form and the problem of scalability in contemporary art raises those questions: what works of different formats tell us about, what space culture we choose to broadcast their exposition content and why / how they violate “universally” agreed “format standards” not only in the meaning of tangible size or material but also in the meaning of concept expression. Each artist has an equal exhibition area in the exhibition. This area in space formally defines the boundaries of the work, the relationship with adjacent works and raises new questions: what is the format for the creator? The works of the majority of the authors in the exposition fit into the established physical space. However, like every rule, this exhibition has several exceptions: A. Skublickas‘ installation in the exhibition Barricades (Barikados)  transcends its boundaries and is exhibited as a real barricade between two exhibitions. In another presentation, N. Poškutė-Jukumienė’s physical work is not exhibited in the exhibition, only the key of the work, that is QR code is presented to the spectator, and the spatial object can be viewed only with a smart device virtually. D. Repeika‘s new work, an architectural-artistic project, transcends the boundaries of the traditional format and invites to pack absolutely everything: spectators, authors, the exhibition and the KCCC Exhibition Hall in Klaipėda City.

Rimantas Milkintas‘ exhibition Milkintas‘ exercises (Milkinto pratimai)

The works of the sculptor, object and installation artist Rimantas Milkintas are characterized by the combination of characteristic minimalist aesthetics and kinetic plastic. Due to the attention to the “significant form” and materiality of the work, the artist‘s works are often compared with the classics of Lithuanian and foreign modernism. However, continuing the tradition of modernist sculpture, especially the aesthetics of minimalism, R. Milkintas also successfully develops postmodern art strategies and the language of conceptualism in his works. Demonstratively open work construction and imaginary movement effect in space creation allows the spectator to easily recognize R. Milkintas‘ style. In the sculptural compositions full of polar tension, the artist compares the physical properties of volumes, such as flexibility, firmness, softness or fragility with his individual experience, and often uses materiality to express the meaningful content of the work. Instead of classic materials the author prefers to choose, according to him, plywood, metal, and industrial beams which best convey our times. The installation of R. Milkintas‘ objects Milkintas exercises (Milkinto pratimai) unites a group of objects selected from various creative periods, which have the possibility of an imaginary kinetic function. The concept of the exhibition is directly related to the summer time and place: the seaside and Klaipėda, when we live in the rhythm of holidays, but we want to move quite easily. However, the ‘exercise‘ equipment exhibited in the exhibition is designed to train the ‘muscles‘ of the head, not the body.

Mariusz Burdek‘s exhibition Transcripts (Transkriptai)

Transkriptai / Transcripts is a series of sculptural works that reveal the main motive of the current research and artistic work of the Polish artist Mariusz Burdek (born 1985), that is the search for multiple interactions. The author seeks to discover means of expression that could more strongly influence the consciousness of art connoisseurs. However, Mr Burdek does not want his works to be imposed or to lose the intimacy of the meeting. He shapes his compositions in such a way that with the minimum amount of resources they touch different sensations simultaneously and in full 100 percent. The artist creates associative mutations in a specific way. In order to do this, he uses a variety of materials: metal, sponge, ceramic, clear resin and water with all its symbolic content as a binder. Water permeates his work. This becomes the counterpoint to the semantic essence. Mariusz‘s sculptures-installations are intuitive works created on the basis of the congested information sphere splashes, reaching everyone in society.

The multifaceted M. Burdek‘s objects maneuver between the visually incomprehensible point of the balance and the establishment in the reality governed by some other laws of attraction. Its seemingly roughly welded corners contrast with a kind of non-functional forms of alien logic. There is a wish to objectify the object, that is to present it as a definite object, to categorize it, but the metal will does not break, and it avoids direct expression. The works communicate the author‘s main creative attitudes: speaking about unselfish existence, non-detachment, rethinking the distance between physical and spiritual space and perceiving the palpability and fragility of experience. The artist moves his existentialist meditations into the sphere of works and does not hide his desire to play with the spectator’s perception.

The project is supported by Klaipėda City Municipality and the Lithuanian Culture Council.
