WORKSHOP “LIVE SPOTS. KLAIPĖDA” IN KCCC ARTS AND CRAFTS COURTYARD

The workshop of urban storytelling and participatory design of the project “Live Spots. Klaipėda” of KCCC Artists-In-Residence will take place on the 15th and 16th of December, 2017 in KCCC Art Yard (Bažnyčių str. 4, Klaipėda), the lecturer – the designer of communications Eglė Vitkutė.
The city is alive when its story is being constantly written in the streets as if in the book; however, not only in ink, but also by glances, conversations, touches. And the characters of this story are people, who used to live or are currently living in this urban space. What could the city reveal to us, if we listened attentively to the bond between its residents and visitors and specific urban places?
“Live Spots. Klaipėda” – is a project of participatory social design, during which the curator, Eglė Vitkutė, together with residents of Klaipėda, who are not indifferent to the city, will aim at highlighting the attraction of port-city places and the change in society related to them. For this purpose an interactive, collectively completed map available at www.gyvitaskai.com will be used. The visitors of the website will be able not only to tell their stories about memorable places of Klaipėda, but will also have the opportunity to learn some intriguing facts from the past. Every storyteller will contribute to the strengthening of the relationships between the communities of the city and revealing the face of Klaipėda nationally and, later, on an international level.
An important part of the project “Live Spots. Klaipėda” is urban storytelling and the workshop of participatory social design, which will take place on the 15th and the 16th of December in KCCC Art Yard. During the workshop the participants will get acquainted with the methods of creating the map of the city, will be communicating with the residents of Klaipėda and collecting stories about the city, and will test the earlier mentioned interactive platform, which is going to help in revealing the unique face of Klaipėda by the urban citizens themselves.
The coordinator of the project, the designer of communications, Eglė Vitkutė, has graduated from High Institute for Applied Arts in Urbino, Italy, and is currently specializing in participatory and social design field. When asked, why the role of communications design is important for sociocultural initiatives, Eglė Vitkutė explained: “The task of communications design is not only to spread the information of the project; far more important is taking into account the needs of target audience, to create a system, a platform enabling people to participate, share their experience in the city and get the feeling of being a part of the team creating the city. In other words, some easily met conditions are created to reveal the overall, diverse and constantly changing face of the city, which would be so much more difficult to perceive in any other way.
An exhibition will take place at the KCCC Exhibition Hall in January, where the results of the project “Live Spots. Klaipėda” will be presented to the community of the city.
The workshop of participatory design of the project “Live Spots. Klaipėda” will take place in KCCC Art Yard (Bažnyčių str. 4, Klaipėda) on the 15th (from 11 AM to 7 PM) and on the 16th (from 10 AM to 5 PM) of December, the lecturer Eglė Vitkutė (free entry, it is possible to participate on a single chosen day as well).
